KIWASCO gets Sh117 million grant to enhance climate-resilient sanitation
Project will involve development of integrated approaches to sanitation improvement, ensuring safely managed human waste along the entire sanitation services chain
Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO), in partnership with Sanivation, has secured a Ksh 117.45 million (€800,000) grant from the African Water Facility to advance the climate-resilient sanitation project.
The primary objective of the project is to enhance KIWASCOS’s capacity to deliver inclusive and sustainable sanitation services throughout Kisumu City.
This will be achieved through developing a comprehensive solutions citywide inclusive sanitation plan and conducting a detailed water-to-value faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP) feasibility study.
These efforts will facilitate the development of integrated approaches to sanitation improvement, ensuring safely managed human waste along the entire sanitation services chain promoting effective resource recovery.
This was announced when Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o hosted a delegation from the African Development Bank, led by Africa Water Facility’s Senior Water and Sanitation Engineer Maureen Ntege-Wasswa.
“They are here to assess our readiness and I am confident KIWASCO is prepared to deliver as this initiative promises better public health, environmental protection, and job creation for Kisumu,” Nyong’o said.
The team was in the County to access the level of preparedness and capacity of KIWASCO in delivering quality water and sanitation services. KIWASCO is the only water and sanitation services provider in Kenya being funded externally.
Meanwhile, Hello Tractor is set to launch one of their digital hubs which in Ahero within Nyando Sub-County. Hello Tractor, a critical mechanisation solution provider in Africa, is an agricultural technology company that connects tractor owners to smallholder farmers.
Hello Tractor bridges has however bridged this gap through its innovative platform which is now operational in 15 African countries as well as in Cambodia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Guatemala, Thailand, and Jamaica.
The digital hub in Ahero is designed to enhance the accessibility of tractor implements and technician services. It also aims to make mechanization services, seeds, fertilizers, and storage units more readily available for farmers in the area.
This was revealed when Founder Director of Hello Tractor Jehiel Oliver paid a courtesy call to Prof Nyong’o at his Town Hall office.
“Many smallholder farmers are unable to afford their own equipment, but they can afford to pay for mechanization services” Nyong’o said.
