First Lady Rachel Ruto calls on well-wishers to support water initiatives in needy schools
She says the water will enable pupils at Bondo Kosiemo school develop a MaMa Kitchen garden and to increase access to fresh vegetables and fruits
First Lady Rachel Ruto has honoured her pledge to drill a borehole at Bondo Kosiemo Comprehensive school in Migori County.
The First Lady commissioned the water project at the school on Tuesday and said clean water was essential to schools and the neighbouring communities.
“We want to enhance and ensure food security and nutritious meals,” she said.
Mrs Ruto was speaking at Bondo Kosiemo Comprehensive School in Migori County.
During a visit to the school last March, the First Lady pledged to drill a borehole to support a kitchen garden programme she initiated at the school.
On Tuesday, the First Lady called on well-wishers to support such initiatives in schools with similar water needs.
Mrs Ruto said the water will enable the pupils to develop a MaMa Kitchen garden and to increase access to fresh vegetables and fruits.
“Water is life and without it, we cannot cook the meals here for the children. The kitchen garden cannot run and children cannot have water to drink,” she said.
Mrs Ruto said she was working closely with government agencies and other partners to deliver similar projects accross the country.
Last week, Mrs Ruto commissioned a similar borehole at Unoa Primary School in Makueni County.
“Our president is doing everything possible to make sure there is water for all so that the people of Kenya have enough clean water,” she said.
Nyatike MP Tom Odege thanked the First Lady, saying the new project will greatly help the school and the local community.
He pointed out that water kiosks will be erected outside the school compound to avoid interference with learning at the school.
He assured President Ruto of support in 2027, noting that the development witnessed in the area has never been seen before.
“I want to give my assurance to the people of Nyatike that we are going to support President Ruto’s bid for a second term,” Odege said.
On development in the constituency, the MP said: “Four roads have been earmarked for tarmacking and are already in the 2025/26 budget,” he said
Migori Deputy Governor Joseph Mahiri said the county was grateful for the National Government’s support in water sector which runs into billions of shillings.
“We want to appreciate what the President is doing for the people of Migori. In the next few years, Migori will effectively compete with other counties,” he said.
He said the county will increase it allocation for water purposes.
The spouse of Migori Governor, Dr Agnes Ochilo, said the residents were fully behind President Ruto’s re-election.
“We have seen the fruits of this government and, for sure, we will stand with the President until 2032,” Mrs Ochilo said.
