Kenya Red Cross calls for peace amid attack on volunteer

In a statement issued to the press, The Kenya Red Cross Society via its Secretary General urged all Kenyans to maintain peace during this post-election period.

This comes after a volunteer with the Red Cross sustained injuries while on duty in Kisumu, during the unrest after the presidential results were announced yesterday.

“Last night, one of our volunteers sustained injuries while responding to the needs of people affected by disturbances in Kisumu,” said Asha Mohammed, the Secretary General of Kenya Red Cross Society.

“The Kenya Red Cross calls on members of the public to refrain from any attacks on its staff and volunteers during times of response,” Asha added.

The organisation’s Secretary General said that its staff and volunteers should not be made attack targets by members of the public during times of response as the humanitarian institution provides assistance to all without discrimination.

Asha asserted that the society remains committed to serving the public and providing its services to all those in need as per its mandate. These include responding  to multiple disasters and emergencies including the ongoing drought affecting 4.35 million people, road accidents and cases of collapsed buildings.
