Sea search for Lamu politician’s kin called off

The search for three bodies of a Lamu politician’s relatives who died at sea has been called off.

Shekue Kahale was with 12 family members including his wife and their four children when their boat capsized on August 13.

He was the only survivor and is being treated at a Nairobi hospital following the traumatic experience.

Nine bodies were found and buried at cemeteries in Kizingitini and Lamu town as per the Muslim religion.

The missing bodies are those of his two children aged two and 12 and that of his nephew, also aged 12.

“We have been camping at sea since the accident. We recovered nine bodies which have been buried already. Unfortunately, we haven’t located three bodies and as it is there is nothing we can do but call off the search,” said search team leader Awadh Ali.

The relatives were reported missing after failing to arrive at Manda airport where they were to board a flight to Mombasa.

Shekue had just vied and lost the Lamu East MP seat to Jubilee’s Athman Shariff.

Shekue was found on Majunguni, an uninhabited island close to Shanga island in Lamu East. He swam to this location all night after watching his relatives die while trying to rescue them.
