East African Community to commemorate 28 years of genocide
In collaboration with other partners, the East African Community Secretariat will on April 7 commemorate the 28th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda at the East African Community headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The partners that will spearhead the commemoration include the Tanzanian Local Authorities in Arusha, the Arusha and Moshi Rwandan Community, the Embassy of Rwanda in Tanzania, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), The Pan African Human Rights Court, the Religious Denominations, the Representatives of Students from High Schools and Universities of the Arusha region.
The event themed: “Remember-Unite-Renew” will pay tribute to the more than one million people who died during the genocide.
Apart from learning from history, this year’s theme will reinforce the need to encourage, resilience and unity.
Apart from that, the event shall reinforce the need for the youth to see into fruition Rwanda’s dream of transforming the country.
The EAC has played a major role in supporting genocide survivors by building a monument in the EAC gardens.
