IEBC bar 11 presidential aspirants from August polls for failure to submit running mates

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has locked out eleven presidential aspirants of the August General Elections after they failed to submit names of their running mates by May 16.

This was revealed by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati during a pre-nomination meeting in Bomas of Kenya where he stated that they failed to present the names by May 16.

Presidential candidates must submit an electronic version as well as a list of at least 2,000 supporters from each of the majority of counties to the IEBC to be allowed to run.

Chebukati claimed that this will allow the poll authority to begin the verification process before the August 9 polls.

“By the end of today all candidates should have submitted the signatures supporting their candidacy,” Chebukati stated.

The electoral authority will then hold a candidate registration process between May 29 and June 7, 2022, in which candidates will be registered to run for various elected seats.

“In this regard, the Commission shall hold a pre-nomination meeting with all the Presidential Aspirants (or their authorized representatives) on the 23rd of May 2022 at the Bomas of Kenya from 8:00 am,” Chebukati had said.

Aspirants for the other elective positions would be notified by their respective Returning Officers of dates for pre-nomination meetings, he noted.

Candidates should inquire at the Commission’s County and Constituency offices about the procedures for registering as candidates, according to the electoral body.
