Police in Nanyuki have launched investigations on what could have caused a KDF officer to shoot and kill a woman who is alleged to be his girlfriend before fatally turning the gun to himself.
The officer is reported to have sneaked from his night duty yesterday at around 9 pm armed with an Ak 47 rifle and in combat uniform.
The gun is said to have been loaded with 23 bullets and the officer had nine others in his pockets.
According to information received from Maximila Wairimu a caretaker at the residential plot where the incident occured, gunshots were heard coming from the house belonging to the deceased where she was living with her mother.
Wairimu notified the police and area Chief Duncan Wachira who arrived only to find the house closed from inside.
Wachira said that they broke their way in to find two people with serious gun injuries lying on the floor.
“We identified the man as a security officer since he was in military unform and an AK 47 rifle by his side. He had an injury in the head while the lady had multiple injuries in the chest and broken limbs,” said Wachira.
He said that they later noted that the officer was still alive and rushed him to Nanyuki Teaching and referral hospital where he succumbed while being treated.
The chief identified the lady as Immaculate Mwende aged 21 and the officer as Immanuel Onyango, 25, and on several occasions they had been seen together even at the girl’s mother grocery business near Nanyuki River bridge.
However Mwende is said to be Onyango’s lover since he is married and a father of two kids.
Confirming the incident Laikipia county CCIO Onesmus Towett said that they are treating the matter as murder and suicide and have in their posession the rifle that was used in the incident.
Towett said that the KDF officer shot himself on the chin and the bullet exited through the back of his head.
“Mwende’s body was lying in a pool of blood with several bullet wounds all over her body and we suspect he had been shot more than seven times” said Towett.
The DCI noted that they will be investigating what could have led into such a henious act since no note or message was retrived from the scene.
Their bodies have since been removed to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary waiting for a post mortem examination.
