No parallel Jamhuri Day celebrations to be held in counties, government says
The government has said that no parallel Jamhuri Day celebrations will be held in counties this year.
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho says the move follows extensive consultations across government and expert advisories that such events will potentially accelerate Covid-19 infections.
Set for December 12, the celebration will only be held at the Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi and only 11,000 invited guests will be allowed.
“In adherence to the containment measures, we will allow only 10,000 people in the public sitting area and around 1,000 in the main dias. Invitations will be done through our usual systems [Nyumba Kumi and the NGAO’s structure] to ensure that there is equal participation and fair representation by all classes,” he said.
Kibicho said vaccination stands will be set up at Uchumi Lang’ata grounds from Friday to Sunday between 8am-5pm to allow invited guests and members of the public get jabs as part of the ongoing mass vaccination drive.
The ministry of Health has accelerated the vaccination campaign in an effort to reach at least 10 million before end of December.
The vaccines supply in the country has continued to improve with the ministry receiving 4.6 million Covid-19 vaccine doses on Monday evening in yet another boost to the ongoing accelerated vaccination campaign.
The consignment included a donation of 4.3 million Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses from the German government via the COVAX facility and an additional 400,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses from Argentina.
