President Ruto, US Secretary of State Rubio call an end to DRC crisis
President William Ruto and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio have demanded an immediate ceasefire in the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
This comes after the two leaders denounced the M23 rebels’ seizure of Goma over the telephone.
“The crucial role of the EAC-SADC joint-led process in de-escalating tensions and advancing peace efforts” was highlighted during the call.
The two leaders pledged to end the crisis through diplomatic efforts. “The move includes the appointment of facilitators, the implementation of the ceasefire, and the broader political process towards a lasting resolution,” President Ruto stated in a statement on his X account.
They also deliberated the situation in Sudan and Kenya’s crucial role in providing a platform for key stakeholders “including political parties, civil society, and other actors – to engage in a process aimed at stopping the tragic slide of Sudan into anarchy and ensuring a pathway towards sustainable peace,” the statement said.
However, the US Embassy in Kenya said Rubio spoke with Kenyan President Ruto to discuss the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, including the unacceptable capture of Goma and Bukavu by the Rwanda-backed M23 armed group.
The two said there is no military solution to the conflict and called for an immediate ceasefire.
