Samburu County government is supplying free seeds to farmers in Samburu central sub county in order to enhance food security in the county.
The farmers living in highland areas of Loroki, Lodokejek, Anga’ta nanyuke, Suguta Marmar, Loosuk and Kirimon have been targeted with free maize and beans seeds in the program.
Speaking after distributing the seeds at Loroki area, the Samburu governor Moses Lenolkulal said the county government has bought eighty tones of seeds at a cost Sh18million which is being distributed to the targeted close to 85,000 farmers.
“As a county government we have had a program to mechanize issues to do with our agriculture as we expect rainfall for our farmers to yield their own food,” he said.
However farmers thanked the county government for supplying them with free seeds which they said have improved their lives in the recent years.
“I want to tell our county government that thank you for these seeds. The seeds aid has helped us a lot. We have planted, harvested and earned money which we used to pay for our children’s school fees from the yields,” said Sitomo Lenayara, a farmer from Samburu central sub county.
In addition to free seeds distribution, a section of farmers have urged the county government to start programs that would enable them deal with drought.
Christine Letiktik, a farmer said introduction of irrigation would be the only solution to drought which has been a great threat to farming in most areas across the county.
