Governors postpones Devolution conference over Covid-19
The Council of Governors has announced the postponement of the 7th and final Annual Devolution Conference, which was scheduled to take place in Makueni County from August 23rd to August 26th, 2021.
This comes following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive suspending all public gatherings and in-person meetings for 60 days.
“The Steering Committee of the 7th and final Annual Devolution Conference hereby notifies members of the public on the inevitable postponement of the Devolution conference,” read part of the statement.
The new devolution dates will be announced later, the Council said.
The Governors urged all residents of Makueni County and neighboring Counties to continue vaccinations in preparation for the conference.
Parents whose children are learning at Makueni Boys’ High School were on Thursday informed that the learners won’t break for mid-term this week as had earlier been communicated.
The Governors had scaled down the number of delegates scheduled to attend the 7th devolution conference to 1000 who per the council will have to be fully vaccinated.
According to the council, this is to ensure that the protocols set by the Ministry of Health are followed.
The conference whose theme is ‘Multi-Level Governance for Climate Action’ got a go ahead a day after leaders from the county called for its postponement due to an upsurge of Covid-19 cases in the County.
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo, expressed fears that the four-day conference could aggravate the worrying infection rates as it was likely to attract a huge crowd of over 3,000 delegates and expose many residents to the risk of covid-19 infection.
The county bosses also resolved that going forward the forum will be held after every two years to allow ample time for implementation of resolutions and feedback.
