FKF boss Nick Mwendwa arrested

Embattled Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa has been arrested over alleged graft in the country’s football governing body.

This comes after Sports Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohamed gazetted the newly appointed Football Kenya Federation caretaker committee and secretariat.

Mwendwa was arrested from Nyayo stadium where Harambee Stars was training and taken to Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters for grilling.

Amina disbanded FKF board and appointed fifteen member committee chaired by retired judge Aaron Ringera to mandate the country’s football business for six months.

In a gazette notice, the CS said the committee will run the affairs of FKF in accordance with its constitution.

“The Caretaker Committee shall hold office for a period of six (6) months with effect from 11th November, 2021,” the notice said.

Responding to the FKF disbandment, Mwendwa said he does not recognise the caretaker committee formed by the Ministry to run football in the country.

Mwendwa vowed to oppose the take-over of FKF by a caretaker committee appointed by the CS.

He said FKF will continue to be in charge of football in the country.

Mwendwa said FKF was only answerable to its regulator, FIFA, and the Ministry of Sports had no authority over its affairs.

“FKF conforms to FIFA statutes. We reject this move by the Sports ministry to disband the federation. No football member should uphold or listen to them,” said Mwendwa.
