KMPG has two weeks to release voter register audit
The Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG) has two weeks to release the complete voter registration list for the August 9 General Election.
The audit firm which also won the contract in 2017 began the process last month with the nationwide electronic verification exercise by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) kicked off on May 4 and comes to a close on June 2.
Wafula Chebukati, the commission’s chairperson said the independent audit was proceeding and that the firm’s suggestions will be adopted before being gazetted.
“The deliberations are going to be made public with the recommendations by the body being approved and incorporated in the final register. This will be ready on or before June 9 and made available to Kenyans so that it is clear who will vote,” he said.
Last month, the IEBC put a hold on new voter registration until March of next year, citing concerns that it would impede the verification process.
The announcement comes amid concerns among some leaders and other stakeholders over the commission’s delay in issuing the findings.
KPMG requested that IEBC work with the civil registrar department to collect a complete list of deceased persons for the preceding four years as part of its prior report’s recommendations.
Thousands of voters’ ID data were not in the national registration bureau, resulting in flaws and anomalies in the register.
The IEBC registration had 19.6 million voters in the last election, while the 2013 principal register had 14.3 million.
