MKU plans to introduce PhD studies in Law

Mount Kenya University’s School of Law will soon have doctorate studies in a move to allow legal professionals to earn their credentials in Kenya.
School of Law Dean Hezekiah Oira has revealed that this is part of MKU’s drive to expand access to legal studies from the Diploma level to the Doctorate level.
“We will be the second private University in the country to offer Doctorate studies for law,” Oira stated.
According to the dean, the move has been driven by the positive reception of the Masters of Law which was introduced at the university’s School of Law in 2022 in a blended mode of study which working people find convenient.
Oira adds that the mode is similar to the ones used in the UK and USA as he explains that they prepare curriculum content for every lesson before posting for the students to access.
This is even as the faculty is expected to host law students and some faculty members from Mount Kigali University, next month in an academic exchange program, as confirmed by Dean Hezekiel Oira.
Oira adds that it is part of the two sister universities’ drive to strengthen legal education across borders.
In this initiative, the school will be collaborating with its Centre for International and Development Law (CIDLAW).
“This is a testament to our shared vision of enhancing legal education through cross-border collaboration and experiential learning. We seek to unlock infinite possibilities in legal frontiers,” Oira states.
During their visit, the students will engage in a variety of activities, including interactive lectures, moot court sessions, and visits to key legal institutions in Kenya, among them the Judiciary, Parliament, law firms, and regulatory bodies.
The activities are designed to expose the visiting learners to Kenya’s legal framework, judicial processes, and the practical application of the law in different contexts.
By interacting with legal scholars and practitioners, the students will gain invaluable insights that complement their academic studies.
Oira asserts that this exchange program is not only beneficial to the visiting students but also to their counterparts at the MKU Parklands campus.
The exchange is an opportunity for future legal minds to engage with diverse legal systems, thereby preparing them to thrive in an increasingly globalized landscape.
“As we welcome our colleagues from Rwanda, we reaffirm our dedication to nurturing legal excellence, fostering regional cooperation, and shaping the next generation of legal professionals. This visit is just the beginning of a long-term collaboration that will enrich both institutions and enhance the quality of legal education in East Africa,” the Dean affirms.
Mount Kigali University is set to offer a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Commercial and Investment Law programme beginning this May.
Established in 2009, the Mount Kenya University School of Law has so far admitted over 2500 students for the Degree while more than 1600 have been admitted for Diploma studies.
The faculty has shaped the careers of thousands of former students.
