Residents of the posh Thome Estate in Nairobi are up in arms over incessant noise emanating from a night club in the middle of the controlled development area that is forcing them to have sleepless nights due to loud music.
In a petition addressed to Nairobi governor Evans Kidero, the group complained of inaction by the Nairobi County government despite numerous complaints filed the relevant county offices.
“We the residents of Thome Estate, garden estate Road hereby request you to close the newly opened Milele Lounge because of noise pollution. Since the hotel started operations months ago, the residents have not known any good sleep because the hotel plays very loud music and pleas to the management to stop the noise have not borne any fruit,” the petition reads in part.
Owners of some of the rental residential houses and commercial flats also claim their tenants have moved out due to the noise menace.
School going children are worst hit since the music amplified by loudspeakers is played from 9pm to dawn.
A similar petition has also been filed by Sunstar Hotel, an adjacent international tourist hotel which has lost guests on multiple occasions due to loud music played by the night club.
“I would like to draw your attention to the dismal state of environment in Sunstar Hotel Nairobi and neighbourhood. The noise pollution cause by blaring of loudspeakers has caused distress to our clientele and staff members.
“The noise has cause great harm to our business as most of the non-governmental; organisations and tour operators have cancelled their bookings with us due to then noise that emanates from Milele Lounge,” a correspondence addressed to Anna Othoro, Nairobi county executive committee member in charge of Trade, Commerce and Industry, Tourism, Cooperative Societies read in part.
Last year, Nairobi County ordered for closure of Space Lounge along Ngong Road over noise pollution during the night.
