The campaign for Kisii County’s Kenya Union of Post primary Education Teachers ( Kuppet) Executive Secretary post has gained momentum with each candidates criss- crossing the area to woo members to vote for them a head of the polls slated for January 15.
Kuppet Executive Secretary, Omari Otungu, who is defending the seat, said the campaigns are peaceful, adding he is optimistic he will recapture the seat owing to the leadership he has offered the members.
The official, who is facing Joseph Abincha and Wilbert Chweya said the union’s membership has risen from 1500 members to 4000 for the last five years and attributed it to the unions’ official aggressive recruitment campaigns and the teachers confidence in the union.
“The union’s membership has grown tremendously. Some of our members joined the county governments, a sign of confidence by the members of the public” Otungu told People Daily in Kisii town.
He said the union is collecting views to be contained in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement ( CBA) proposals on basic salary increment, formula on promotions and risky allowance due to Covid 19 pandemic.
Otungu assured members AONminet insurance scheme, contracted by the Union, was effective and the company had contracted more hospitals and services improved for members to access them.
“ The union has resolved work related conflicts and ensured that our members jobs are protected” Otungu said, adding it has set up a robust Burial Benevolent Fund ( BBF) with enhanced benefits.
He said measures have been put in place to ensure that the election is free, fair and peaceful, adding the union was negotiating with the government to employ teachers to cope with the increasing workload.
