DPP orders arrest, prefer murder charges against six cops linked to Embu brothers killing
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Nordin Haji has ordered the arrest and prosecution of six police officers linked to the deaths of Embu brothers in the Kianjokoma.
They will face murder charges today at Milimani High Court.
Consequently, Haji directed the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyamabi to enforce the arrest of the six before close of business on Monday pending the conclusion of the probe and to curb any interference from the yet to be identified officers.
“Keeping in view the urgency of this matter we expect to receive the results of all investigations into this matter no later than August 16, 2021. We have their assurance and commitment to do so,” he said.
Once arrested, the six were set to be arraigned in court on Tuesday to face murder charges.
This comes hours after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) concluded its investigations and forwarded the file to the DPP.
In a statement, Inspector General of police was directed to arrest and arraign the six to avoid any interference with evidence and or intimidation of witnesses.
“Based on the preliminary Investigation Report forwarded by the Inspector General (IG), I am directing the IG to immediately arrest and arraign in court, in Nairobi, all officers involved pending investigations by the IPOA to avoid any interference with evidence and or intimidation of witnesses,” read the statement.
“For that reason, and keeping in view the urgency of this mattaer, we expect to receive the results of all investigations into this matter not later than close of busines today, 16th August 2021. We have the assuarance and commitment to do so.”
In a statement, the civilian oversight body against police said it had concluded investigations of the Kianjokoma brothers and ordered the six officers to surrender any government stores in their possession including their firearms within the shortest time possible.
It also recommended that the officers be relieved of their duties immediately pending the outcome of an independent review of the findings, which will be sent to the DPP.
“As it stands now, the six officers face a capital offence – murder. This recommendation is not likely to take a different direction,” said IPOA.
The six police officers attached to Manyata police stations in Embu North Sub-County of Embu County were yesterday suspended.
Isaiah Nakoru the Eastern Regional Commissioner said the details of six officers will be available once they receive official communication from the Inspector General of Police and Office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
