FKF boss Nick Mwendwa, Barry Otieno to appear in court today

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa and Secretary General Barry Otieno are to appear at Milimani court today over corruption allegations at the governing body.
The two spent their weekend at Gigiri Police station and were grilled by the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on the alleged misuse of public funds that came following inspection committee findings.
The inspection by the committee formed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed established that FKF officials allegedly flouted national laws and regulations guiding management of sports organisations, public funds, hiring and firing employees.
“The Registrar has forwarded the report to my office and recommended that DCI, NIS and EACC carry out further investigation to establish the extent to which the misappropriation of funds in FKF may have occurred with a view of prosecuting those who may be found culpable .The current officials of FKF be removed from office to pave way for further investigations pending conclusion” read the statement.
The federation could not account for more than Sh513 million advanced to it by the government.
There were neither cashbooks nor payment vouchers in regard to grants from the Ministry of Sports for funds the federation received between 2017 and 2021.
“During the committee’s visit to FKF offices, there were no procurement documents available for verification. On further inquiry, the CEO confirmed that they were not using the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act of 2015,” states the report.
Mwendwa was arrested by officers from DCI last Friday at the Golden Tulip Hotel on Muthithi Road in Westlands, where he was meeting the national team Harambee Stars players ahead of its final 2022 World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda.
His arrest came after Amina Mohamed gazetted the newly appointed FKF caretaker committee and secretariat.
Amina disbanded FKF board and appointed fifteen member committee chaired by retired judge Aaron Ringera to mandate the country’s football business for six months.
In a gazette notice, the CS said the committee will run the affairs of FKF in accordance with its constitution.
“The Caretaker Committee shall hold office for a period of six (6) months with effect from 11th November, 2021,” the notice said.
