Radio Africa fires 27 employees, cites rising operational costs

CEO says some have been part of its team for up to over 20 years

Radio Africa Group has retrenched 27 employees citing rising operations costs that pose a threat to the sustainability of the company.

“Yesterday, we made the incredibly difficult decision to let go of 27 of our colleagues. This was one of the most challenging moments in our journey. “These individuals have been a great part of our team for many years, some for over 20 years,” Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Martin Khafafa said in a memo to staff.

“Please know that this decision was not taken lightly; it was necessary to ensure the sustainability of our business while facing rising operational costs in a harsh economic climate,” he added.

“I understand that the current mood is heavy, and I fully recognise the uncertainty this may have caused. This restructuring is intended to stabilise our operations and position the company for future growth. Our priority now is to support each other, remain focused, and continue delivering the value and experience that our clients expect from us.”

“I want to reassure you of my commitment to transparency, stability, and creating a more resilient company as we work to transform our organization into a leading audiovisual business. I am confident in our ability to navigate this period together,” he continued.

It was not immediately clear which employees were let go in the exercise but in July last year, then CEO Patrick Quarcoo had announced a phased retrenchment aimed at making the media house a “leaner and efficient organisation.”

Radio Africa owns some of the country’s popular platforms, including Kiss 100, Classic 105, Radio Jambo, East FM, Smooth FM, and The Star newspaper.

The restructuring is being effected despite The Star getting exclusive rights to print and distribute the government’s print advertising outlet, My Gov.
