Two arrested in car theft syndicate, 43 driving licenses, tracking gadgets and number plates seized in Kayole, Nairobi
Sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are holding two suspects in connection to a wider organised car theft syndicate operating in Nairobi and beyond.
Patrick Masinde aged 45 and Fernando Mwenda aged 42 years respectively were arrested today at dawn by a contingent of officers from Obama Police Station in Kayole, Nairobi and an assorted ten number plates, 43 driving licenses, tracking gadgets, identification cards and bank cheque books among other exhibits recovered.
Police suspect they belong to their victims.
Investigators have widened their scope of investigations to possible car tracking firms who could be colluding with the suspected criminals to trace vehicles of their targeted victims or customers to steal from them.
“Detectives based in Kayole are currently interrogating two motor vehicle theft suspects who were arrested in a raid conducted early this morning in Njiru, Nairobi county. The suspects Patrick Masinde, 45 and Fernando Mwenda, 42 were arrested minutes past 1am by a contingent of officers from Obama police station and 10 number plates, 43 driving licenses, tracking gadgets, identification cards and bank cheque books among other exhibits.” An update from the DCI Amin Mohamed reads in part.
Also recovered were tens of fake rubber stamps belonging to different motor vehicle selling dealers, financial institutions and the immigration department among others.
The suspects are believed to be part of a larger syndicate involved in carjackings and sale of stolen motor vehicles in the city and other parts of the country.
“A comprehensive search is currently ongoing at the suspect’s hideout in Obama estate aimed at gathering more information on the operations of the suspects.” The DCI added.
