Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai to appear in court over violent clashes

Kuresoi North Member of Parliament (MP) Alfred Mutai is expected to be arraigned today, Tuesday, June 23, 2026, after spending the night in police custody at Nakuru Central Police Station following violent clashes that left five people injured and property, including vehicles, destroyed during a public event in Kuresoi North.
Mutai was detained yesterday, Monday, June 22, 2026 after surrendering to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Nakuru, where he arrived accompanied by his lawyers for questioning over the incident that occurred last Friday, June 19, at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds during a Youth Empowerment Meeting.
Police said the legislator had been wanted for questioning since the clashes broke out and later presented himself for interrogation. After several hours of grilling, detectives opted to detain him pending arraignment as investigations continue.
The MP is accused of links to chaos that erupted during the event, which was attended by several leaders, including Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, former Majority Leader Oscar Sudi, and other local politicians.
During his detention at Nakuru Central Police Station, Mutai reportedly resisted instructions from officers as they processed his booking into the cells, in an incident captured on video and widely circulated online.
In the clip, officers are heard directing him to occupy a designated area inside the cell, to which he objected, insisting on different arrangements.
The MP was accompanied by supporters and fellow politicians, including Rongai MP Paul Chebor, creating tense and chaotic scenes at the police facility.
Mutai’s detention comes amid ongoing investigations into violent disruptions at the Kuresoi North event, where at least five people were injured and several vehicles damaged.
Police also reported that a bus ferrying tents and chairs to the venue was set ablaze by unknown individuals during the chaos.
In connection with the incident, 56 suspects were initially arrested, but 44 were released after interrogation.
Twelve suspects were later presented before a Nakuru court on Monday, where police sought a 21-day detention order to complete investigations into charges of arson, assault, and malicious damage to property.
However, the court declined the request and instead released the suspects on bond and bail conditions.
Each was released on a bond of Sh50,000 with one surety or a cash bail of Sh20,000, and ordered to report regularly to DCI offices in Kuresoi North every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The case will be mentioned on July 13, 2026.
