Coast leaders fault Joho over ‘praising his poor high school grade’

A group of Coast leaders have cautioned embattled Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho against “hoodwinking” Coast residents into believing in what they described as “narrative of failure.”

Speaking separately, Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu and Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar said Joho’s statement that a D- (minus) is not the end of life was bound to mislead learners in the region to believe doing well in school is not important.

Kazungu said Joho’s statement could have negative repercussions on the education standards of the region which is already facing many challenges.

Speaking in Malindi, the CS said the job market has no room for people who fail in school.

“Joho should not glorify D- . He is misleading Coast people ,’’ he said adding the Mombasa Governor was marginalising his own people by appearing to belittle the importance of education.

Kazungu said scenarios where people who have attained poor grades succeed should be seen as isolated cases and should not be portrayed to mean that learners do not have to work hard in school because they can still make it in life.

“I appreciate youths who go through problems in their school life, but let those challenges be the driving force to make them do better and excel in their studies,’’ he said and urged youths to know that there is no shortcut in life adding that it’s only through hard work, discipline and excellence which can open doors.

At a press briefing in Mombasa, Senator Omar appealed to Coast people to reject “the narrative of failure” and instead strive for academic excellence.
