The reign of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has formally come to an end after it relinquished its services back to the Nairobi County Government.
Outgoing NMS Director-General Lieutenant General Mohamed Badi and Nairobi Governor signed a transfer deed at City Hall that saw NMS functions revert to the county government.
The county government now has full authority to handle the county health functions, transport and ancillary services.
Projects involving Nairobi’s public works, physical planning and development have also been transferred to the county government now headed by Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja.
“I really want to honour the NMS and the staff there. You did a good job despite the challenges which I know were a lot,” Sakaja said.
NMS employees were assured that they will be onboarded to play a major role in the important activities of the county.
“I want to urge my staff in Nairobi City County and those who are coming back that you are all now one. There is no former NMS staff and no former county government staff. You are all staff of the County and you will work together as equals. ,” Nairobi governor said.
Badi on his part stated his gratitude for the chance to lead NMS for two years as the director general.
“I would like to thank governor Sakaja for helping us guide NMS to what we have achieved today. It has been a rigorous and remarkable 2 years culminating to this very moment as we officially handover the transferred functions back to the county government,” he said.
Outgoing Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa urged the governor to build on the good foundation and deliver services to the city residents.
“The county and the national government can work with each other for the betterment of the citizens. I urge Sakaja to focus on strengthening this partnership together with the military to make Nairobi a better place,” he said.
Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko had in 2020 handed over the key functions of the county to the NMS with the event being witnessed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa at State House.
