Autopsy: Slain MMU student Sylvia Kemunto was strangled and hit with blunt object

Dr Oduor says there were strangulation marks on the neck and blood clots in the head, an indication she was hit with a blunt object and also an injury on the lower limb

A postmortem report on the body of the slain Multimedia University student Sylvia Kemunto Ayaye has disclosed she was strangled and hit with a blunt object on the head.
While producing the report of the autopsy conducted at Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home, Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor, who was accompanied by private pathologist Dr Martha Mwangi, said her body was in a bad condition due to decomposition.
He said that there was strangulation marks on the neck and blood clots in the head indication she was hit with a blunt object and also an injury on the lower limb.
“There was an evidence there was a struggle. The deceased was strangled,  and there were clear evidence of strangle marks on the neck and blood clotting in the head which is clear evidence that she was hit with a blunt object,” Oduor.
The pathologist also dismissed social media reports that Kemunto was pregnant, saying the postmortem confirmed that the cervix was still closed and no foetus in her womb.
He also confirmed that Kemunto did not die by drowning as it was alleged on social media.
Lawyers led by Danstan Omari and Shadrack Wambui assured the family that they will pursue justice for their daughter citing that they will file a suit against the university to know its role on the security issues of the students,
“We will file a case in court against the university seeking to know its role in the security of the students,” Omari said.

On his part, Wambui said that the incident happened due negligence since security guards were not at hand to respond to commotion where the student was killed in her room.
“We are wondering how a student was murdered in her room without a response from the security since it was logical that they were supposed to hear the commotion,” Wambui said.
They also appealed the the wellwishers to support the family via M-Pesa pay bill number 8062294, account name Sylvia Kemunto Ayaye.
Kemunto’s body was recovered on Wednesday night in a water tank at the rooftop of a hostel within the institution’s compound.
Kemunto, a Mass Communications and Computer Science major, had disappeared under mysterious circumstances on Sunday, March 30.
Her mother, Triza Kwamboka, who lives in Kawangware, had sent her upkeep money through a church elder’s phone. When she tried to confirm whether her daughter had received the funds, her calls went unanswered.
Growing concerned, Kemunto’s mother traveled to the university, only to discover that her daughter was missing.
The university management confirmed her absence, prompting the mother to file a report at Langata Police Station, where an Occurrence Book (OB) entry was made.
“She had told me about a young man who was making advances at her. She said she did not like him and I told her to stand firm,” said Kwamboka.
On the day of her disappearance, Kemunto’s roommate had gone to church, leaving her alone in their Block B room, number 90.
Investigations reveal that Kemunto’s boyfriend, Philip Eric Mutinda, a first-year Electrical Engineering student, visited her room around 1pm that day.
Mutinda has since been arrested as the main suspect in the act.
