Murang’a Women Representative, Sabina Chege has skipped the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Electoral Code of Conduct enforcement committee hearing, after being taken ill.
Through her lawyer, Otiende Amollo, the committee heard that she was admitted at the Nairobi Hospital on February 16, 2022, a day after she first appeared before IEBC to answer to vote-rigging remarks.
“The respondent is not in attendance today as she is indisposed and has been admitted to Nairobi Hospital,” Amollo said.
IEBC chairman Chair Wafula Chebukati has since directed that the matter proceeds to a full hearing on March 8, 2022, at 9 am.
Further, Chebukati has directed that Chege desists from commenting on the case in public forums.
Chege was scheduled to appear in court on February 10, 2022, to face allegations of breaking the electoral conduct code for comments she made during a political rally in Vihiga County.
The Chebukati-led commission last week defended its decision to summon Chege, stating that all persons bound by the Code of Conduct should re-assure voters of the impartiality of the commission and secrecy of the ballot.
