NPS announce nationwide crackdown on vehicles, motorcycles with unauthorised lights

National Police Service (NPS) spokesman Bruno Shioso has announced a nationwide crackdown on vehicles including motorcycles with illegal LED lights, red and blue flickers and blinding lamps.

Through a statement, Shioso noted that most vehicles and motorcycles had modified illuminating lights among other unathorised lights.

“The National Police Service observes that most personal and public vehicles have unlawfully equipped lamps, modified illuminating lights, red lights, opaque rear lights, flashing lights, flickering lights, LED illuminating bars, unauthorised sirens, unauthorised red and blue lights,” the statement read.

Shioso also stated that the listed lights were not in line with the traffic rules requirements thus endangering lives of road users.

“The above are contrary to the requirements thus endangering the lives of road users. All vehicle owners are advised to adhere to the requirements of the law to avoid any inconveniences,” he stated.

According to Section 55 of the Traffic Act, only vehicles used by the President, Deputy President, the police, ambulances and fire engines may be fitted with sirens.

In addition, Shioso also stated that for Public Service Vehicles (PSV), traffic police officers will also be checking for the driver’s and conductor’s licenses.

“All PSV vehicles, tour and commercial vehicles are advised to ensure their vehicles have valid licenses including Road Service License, Tour Service License, Motor Vehicle Inspection sticker and PSV badge for the driver and conductor,” he added.

“NPS has directed traffic enforcement officers across the country to impound and charge motor vehicle owners in accordance with relevant provisions of the law,” the statement read.

Police have called on Kenyans to fully cooperate with the crackdown.
