Ambaka, Oyoo headline Shujaa squad as Uhuru hands over flag to Commonwealth bound team

The national seven’s rugby team head coach Damian McGrath has named the final squad for the Commonwealth Games to take place later this month in Birmingham.

Veteran players Willy Ambaka, Nelson Oyoo and Billy Odhiambo headline the Commonwealth-bound team with Vincent Onyala making a return to the squad after representing the national 15s side, Simbas in the World Cup qualifiers in France.

Kevin Wekesa, Daniel Taabu and Levy Amunga who didn’t play for Shujaa in London Sevens in May also made the cut to feature in the global event set for England.

Other players include; Herman Humwa, Alvin Otieno, Bush Mwale, Tony Omondi, Johnstone Olindi, Billy Odhiamb and Edmond Anya.

Kenya will face Australia, Jamaica and neighbours Uganda in Pool ‘D’, McGrath insisting the goal is to qualify for the knockout stages.

Back in 2014, Kenya reached the plate semi-finals where they lost 28-05 against Wales after losing in the main cup quarter-finals 19-07 against New Zealand.

President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday evening handed over the flag to the World Championships and Commonwealth Games bound teams at State House.

The government has fully funded the Commonwealth Games-bound team to Birmingham, with Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Dr. Amina Mohamed assures the Head of State that the Games Management is on track to make sure the team is well managed and facilitated.

The world championships begin in Eugene, Oregon on Friday and end on July 24, before the Commonwealth Games begin in Birmingham, UK four days later.
