Al Shabaab militants kill two police officers in third bombing
Two more Administration Police officers were today morning killed after their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted along Malelei-Kulan Road within Liboi area in Garissa county.
The attack believed to have been orchestrated by the al Shabaab sympathisers came hours after eight other officers were killed in two separate incidents on Wednesday.
Two others were badly injured and were airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.
The incident occurred at 7am while the officers were on normal patrol when the vehicle belonging to the Department of Immigration was blown up.
Northeastern Regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh said two officers perished in the attack.
“Two officers have perished in the attack. We have beefed up security in the area and within our borders.” Saleh said.
Saleh observed that the suspected Al Shabaab suspects could have planted the Ied overnight since the officers used the same route during a whole day operation on Tuesday.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet raised a security red flag warning that Al Shabaab suspects have sneaked into the country.
The IG singled out Abdrizak Maalim Aweys as one of the suspects being hunted by police over links to Somalia-based Al-Shabaab terrorist organisation.
Mid this month, Omar Jillo’s Chief was murdered after Al Shabaab militants raided his home. They interrogated him before shooting in presence of his family.
The militants also abducted two Kenya Police Reservists before escaping towards Somalia.
Last week, four police officers and three Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials were injured after the vehicle they were traveling in was blown up by an ied planted on the road days after two quarry workers were killed in Elwak by the militants.
They were heading to Dadaab from Liboi.
The area in under dawn to dusk curfew over insecurity linked to serial Al-Shabaab terrorist attacks.
Other areas under curfew include Mandera Town, Arabia, Fino, Lafey Kotulo and Elwak.
However, Deputy President William Ruto announced the government will lift the curfew during the Holy month of Ramadhan.
Northern Kenya has remained largely volatile over the threat of Al Shabaab terrorist threat although police have managed to contain attacks.
