Murder probe, mine deaths and roadside fury as five die in separate incidents
Police are investigating a series of deaths reported in Kirinyaga, Nakuru, West Pokot and Migori counties, including the stabbing of a woman, two bodies recovered from water and a fatal mining accident that left another person injured.
In Kirinyaga East Sub-County, detectives launched investigations into the murder of 38-year-old Milka Wambui Njira, whose body was discovered in a pool of blood inside her bedroom at Rwambiti Shopping Centre on Thursday, October 15.
Police said Wambui was found lying on her back in her two-bedroom rented house in Rwambiti Location, Gichugu Central Division, with deep stab wounds on her upper left shoulder near the heart.
Investigators recovered a bloodstained kitchen knife with a red handle placed on a black plastic chair. The weapon is suspected to have been used in the killing.
A man reportedly cohabiting with the deceased was being sought by police and was still at large when the incident was reported. The body was moved to Kibugi Funeral Home pending a postmortem examination.
In Kirinyaga Central, police are also investigating the discovery of an unidentified elderly woman’s partly decomposed body in Mt Kenya Forest.
Herders reportedly stumbled upon the body in a thicket on Thursday. No visible injuries were observed, while firewood suspected to have belonged to the woman was found nearby.
The body was taken to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and postmortem examination.
In Nakuru County, detectives in Rongai are probing the death of 35-year-old Evans Kipketer Rotich, whose body was found floating in Moricho Dam on October 14, a day after he was reported missing.
Police said there were no visible physical injuries. The body was moved to Nakuru County Annex Mortuary.
Meanwhile, one person died and a 19-year-old woman was rescued after a pit mine collapsed at Kambi Karaya mining field in Seker Ward, West Pokot County, on October 14.
The deceased, identified as 45-year-old Chepocheropoi Apura, was retrieved from the collapsed mine and taken to Kapenguria Mortuary. The rescued woman received first aid at Kambi Karaya Community Medical Clinic.
In Migori County, police are investigating the death of Andrew Otieno Joseph, whose body was discovered floating in water inside a mine shaft in the Macalder area. Investigators suspect possible electrocution by equipment used to operate the mine, although a postmortem is expected to establish the cause of death.
Separately, outrage erupted in Kasese, Muhoroni Sub-County, after a speeding lorry reportedly struck and killed a man standing beside the road on Thursday evening.
Angry residents allegedly torched four lorries used to transport construction materials, accusing drivers of excessive speeding and endangering lives.
