CS Murkomen expresses fear of a resurgence of criminal gangs in Central Kenya
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has expressed fear of the emergence of criminal gangs in the Central region of Kenya following the destruction of property witnessed during the June and July protests this year.
Speaking during the “Jukwaa la Usalama meeting in Kiambu County, Murkomen has urged the judiciary to take the matter, which involves several cases in court, as weighty.
According to Murkomen, those involved in the sponsoring and destruction of government offices in Kikuyu and other parts of the region including Nyandarua, shall face the law.
The CS also called on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to remain firm in charging those found destroying public property, as he explained that a resurgence of goons and gangs in the Central region will compromise national security at large and not counties in the region alone.
“Those involved in the destruction of property have serious cover from politician friends who threaten officers or organize demonstrations protecting them. We urge the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) and the Judiciary to remain firm because we cannot succeed as a sector if we work alone,” Murkomen stated.
“A resurgence of gangs in the Central region will not only affect the region but also compromise national security,” he added.
Further, the CS claimed that the thriving of illegal businesses for Wines and spirits in the region has been mainly caused by the conflict of interest as he accused government officers in charge of licensing being the majority owners of the businesses.
“Conflict of interest has led to the thriving of illegal wines and spirits in the region has been the main cause of illegal businesses booming. Those expected to issue licenses to the businesspeople are the businessmen and women,” he stated.
The CS has been moving across the country, holding security forums in different regions.
Currently, he has done the Coastal region and the North Rift region.
