East and Central Africa’s largest private varsity, MKU to hold 24th graduation fete next month

The East Africa’s largest private varsity, Mount Kenya University (MKU) will hold its 24th graduation ceremony next month, December 8, 2023 where thousands of graduands will be conferred with degree and other various university awards.

This will be the second graduation ceremony and the budding university this year following the 23rd graduation fete that was held in August this year and presided over by the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan where 6,108 graduands were conferred with PhDs, master’s, degrees, diplomas and certificates and Khan was also awarded an Honorary Degree in Law.

He received an honorary doctorate of law degree from Mount Kenya University.

Notably, he has been a King’s Counsel since 2011 and a Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn, and he was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2018.

The upcoming ceremony will be held beginning 9.00 a.m at the graduation pavilion, Happy Valley ground, main campus along Garissa Road.

“The chancellor, Mount Kenya University, Professor John Struthers on behalf of the University Council, management board and Senate, wishes to inform all our esteemed graduands who have qualified for conferment of degree and various university awards, that the 24th graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023…The graduation ceremony will be presided over by the University Chancellor, Prof. John Struthers, who will award diplomas and certificates and confer degrees.” A notice by the university reads in part.

MKU alongside its subsidiary, Mount Kenya Kigali (MKU) has being ranked the largest private university in East and Central Africa.

Recent report by CPS Research International ranked MKU among top five destination for international students from Africa and beyond.

According to the report, in the private universities category, MKU emerged third, in terms of satisfaction, MKU was ranked fourth at 57.05 per cent.

“International students preferred some universities to others because: high quality of education, affordability aspects, high global ranking, great culture, holistic education, good placement and internship offers.” The report reads in part.

During the 23rd graduation ceremony, MKU founder and chairman Simon Gicharu waived Sh80million outstanding fees arrears for more than 4,000 past students who have not collected their certificates.

“The issue of uncollected certificates was worsened by the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Over 4,000 past students have accumulated storage fees, library arrears, and late return of graduation gowns. In total, the levies amount to about Sh80 million.” Gicharu said.

Gicharu, a leading businessman and philanthropist was recently appointed by president William Ruto as the board chairman of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
