Mystery over Senator Omtatah’s office raid in Busia

Senator Okiya Omtatah’s Busia County office was in the wee hours of Saturday night raided by unknown people who made away with an assortment of materials including a television set and crucial documents.

The raiders, who struck at 2am, ransacked the office in Korinda area, Busia County also stole computers and other electronics, whose value is yet to be determined.

“Our office has been broken into by unknown people. They stole a television set, a computer, confidential documents and a flash disk.” Becker Ogot, Omtatah’s office manager said.

“We are preparing an inventory of the items and trying to find out what has been stolen because some small things like flash disks might look like they are not valuable but they contain confidential information.”

Ogot urged security agencies to move with speed and bring to book the suspects, adding that the incident came when they were assessing and looking into pending bills before they could compile the report and make it public.

Omtatah’s landlord Jacob Ikomero, hoped security agencies will arrest those behind the incident.

“They broke into the office through a window at around 2am and managed to get away with electronics before proceeding to a neighbour’s house, where they again stole some items.” Ikomero said.

Contacted for comment, Senator Omtatah said he doesn’t know the motive behind the raid. “I don’t want to speculate for now.” He said.

Busia County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto confirmed the incident and assured locals that the police have launched investigations into the matter.

The Busia senator has been a vocal human rights crusader, many times seen as a thorn in the flesh of the State.

Most recently, challenged the implementation of the Finance Act, 2023 in court, a suit that is yet to be determined.
