DP Gachagua claim Sh16billion stolen, offer no initiative by government to recover the loot
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sensationally claimed that taxpayers’ money running into billions including funds meant to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic was stolen by senior government officials days before the Kenya Kwanza administration took over power last September.
Speaking when he met professionals from Tetu Constituency in Nyeri County at a Nairobi hotel, the DP said government coffers were raided by the officials as the Supreme Court case against their victory was going on.
“Money was stolen from Covid-19 when people were dying. Two days before elections, they stole Sh6 billion and pretended to sell some shares from Telkom. When there was a case before the Supreme Court, they stole another Sh10 billion purportedly to pay some contractors,” he said during the dinner at a Nairobi hotel.
However, Gachagua did not outline any measures by government to recover the alleged looted taxpayers’ money and any modalities to bring the culprits to book.
The current administration has been on a blame-game frenzy attributing ills to the previous administration but no efforts have been forthcoming to prosecute the alleged culprits.
The Deputy President added that the heist was taken to the officials’ home.
“Money was brought in cartons from Wilson Airport and flown in choppers to people’s homes,” he added.
