CS Jumwa halts extension of civil servants’ retirement age

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has stopped the extension process of civil servant’s service beyond the mandatory age of 60 years.

In a letter to Public Service Commission Chairperson Ambassador Anthony Muchiri, the CS noted that her decision to halt the extension also affects those who had already been cleared to continue service beyond the mandatory age of 60.

She said that civil servants have made numerous appeals wanting to have their services extended beyond the set age in total disregard of the law.

“It has come to the attention of the ministry responsible for public service that public officers who have attained the mandatory age as provided under the Public Service Commission Act are making numerous appeals to the commission for unjustified extensions,” she wrote.

The letter suspends all extension review cases and any existing cases be revoked to enable proper legislation and succession management guidelines be implemented across the public service.

The CS had earlier noted that it was becoming a trend for persons who had attained the retirement mandatory age to get contract extensions which did not sit fair as younger people are struggling with employment scarcity in the country.

The move according to the CS will pave way for a seamless transition for university students into the job market.
