Nurses accuse government of prioritising political campaigns at expense of healthcare

Nurses, through the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), have today accused the government of prioritizing political campaigns at the expense of healthcare delivery in the country.

They said efforts to bring the government on board to solve the pending issue of the signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) have been futile due to the current intense campaign ahead of the August 8 poll.

As the strike bites into its 30th day, the striking nurses vowed not to go back to work until the matter is resolved even if it’s with the next elected government.

Speaking today during their peaceful demonstrations in Nairobi, KNUN Deputy Secretary General Maurice Opetu told the nurses to keep away from work.

The hundreds of nurses assembled at Uhuru Park after which they presented petitions to the Office of the President, Ministry of Health and the Salaries Remunerations Commission (SRC).

“The government does not really care and so we also don’t care and we want to assure that we are ready to die for the CBA. How much will they use to mitigate the suffering of patients? How many people have to die before looking into the matter?” questioned Opetu.
