Over 1,500 people killed, scores injured after earthquake in Turkey-Syria

At least 1,504 people have died and numerous others injured after a strong 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook southern Turkey and northern Syria today.

A total of 592 people have died throughout Syria overall, with 371 of the deaths occurring primarily in the provinces of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus; and1,089 others wounded.

In the meantime, the opposition-controlled regions of northwest Syria were the scene of at least 221 fatalities and 419 wounded, according to the Syria Civil Defense.

In a televised address today, Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoan stated that at least 912 people had died and 5,385 had been injured.

Rescue operations are underway with rescuers working through the rubble of collapsed buildings to locate survivors.

Following the disaster, the European Union, NATO and 45 other countries have offered help.
