Contest for DCI narrows to 3 as commission hands over names to President

The National Police Service Commission have forwarded the names of top three candidates for the position of Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to President William Ruto, who will select his preferred candidate.

This is after NPSC concluded conducting interviews sessions yesterday for the ten shortlisted candidates at Kenya School of Government (KSG) in Lower Kabete to reolace George Kinoti.

The commission chaired by Eliud Kinuthia and in attendance of Noor Gabow designated as the acting Inspector General (IG) among others had a whole day for the process as they hoped to sieve a final candidate from the ten shortlisted out of the 253 applicants for the position.

“The 10 candidates, each of whom seek to fill the vacant position left by former DCI Director George Kinoti, were invited for interviews and vetting on today, at Kenya School of Government, lower Kabete in Nairobi… The National Police Service Commission shortlisted 10 candidates out of 253 applicants suitable for the position of Director, Directorate of Criminal Investigation,” stated Kinuthia.

The interviews followed the pronouncement by Ruto On September 27 announcement of the resignation of  Kinoti.

The three are; Gideon Munga Nyale, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat and Nicholas Ireri Kamwende.

Four years ago, the head of the Kenya Police football team and former head of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, Munga, was named by the departing Inspector General of Police, Hilary Mutyambai, as the Chief of Staff of the National Police Service Commission before being transferred to serve as his principal assistant months later (ATPU).

Prior to his changeover, Munga had been named the head of Planning and briefly transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Lagat, the current Director of Reforms at DCI headquarters, is another contender on the list. He is an expert in explosives and post-blasts and formerly served as the chief of the forensic bomb disposal squad. He graduated from Kenya’s National Defence College.

Former Nairobi regional DCI Chief Ireri is now the Director of Planning at DCI headquarters.

Ireri served as the unit’s Anti-Narcotics and Banking Fraud Units’ Director of Forensic Services.

Others on the list include Esther Chepkosgei Seroney, the current County Police Commander in Bomet, Amin Ibrahim Mohamed, who now oversees the Internal Affairs Unit, Bernard Barasa Walumoli, the officer in charge of Coast Regional Criminal Investigations, Jonyo Former DCI Headquarters chief of legal services Michael Wiso, current DCI Railways command chief Simon Mwangi Wanderi, and former INTERPOL HQs in Lyon, France, Paul Jimmie Ndambuki have all held leadership positions.
