IPOA probe three police officers over misconduct during election period
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into three police officers over alleged misconduct during this election period.
According to the oversight body, there have been some incidents involving the police that were atrocious which they fervently condemn.
“IPOA has commenced investigations into the case of two men shot and a woman assaulted allegedly by the police in Eldas, Wajir county. The victims sustained non-fatal injuries,” stated the oversight body.
The next occurrence was an alleged rape attempt on a woman by a Matisi Police Station officer in Bungoma county on August 10, and a shooting incident involving an officer and a political aspirant’s bodyguard in Uasin Gishu county, that led to serious injuries.
Despite the three occurrences, the authority said that most of the officers have conducted themselves well and in accordance with the rule of law.
IPOA stated that it will continue to monitor police response in managing crowds and maintaining security during this election period. It further outlined instances by which police officers were allowed to use force as the last measure and in accordance with the law.
“IPOA is also observing how the Police continue to manage crowds, maintain security and order during this electioneering period,” read part of the statement.
“A police officer shall always attempt to use non-violent means first. The force used shall be proportional to the objective to be achieved, the seriousness of the offense, and the resistance of the person against whom it is used,” expressed the commission on the application of force by the police.
The oversight commission lastly assured Kenyans that it will continue to be independent, impartial and fair in the exercise of its mandates and responsibilities.
