One-man show Presidential Debate as Raila, Wajackoyah skip event

The much-anticipated Presidential Debate kicked off at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) yesterday with Raila Odinga skipping the debate.

Deputy President, Willian Ruto hogged the limelight as his opponent, Raila Odinga was a no-show.

The second session of the debate had been reserved for the presidential candidates with ratings of more than five per cent in recent polls. Ruto and Raila were expected to sell their agenda to Kenyans but the former Premier missed the debate citing alleged poor credibility of his opponent and biased moderation.

Ruto took this chance to have a go at his main opponent.

“My competitor is not here because he doesn’t have a plan, he doesn’t have an agenda,” Ruto said.

“He is not here because he doesn’t want to answer difficult questions,” continued the deputy president.

Ruto, when queried on corruption allegations, especially dealing with his alleged illegitimate acquisition of land said, “Any piece of land that I have is legally acquired.” When questioned on how he would deal with graft cases, he stated that his government would be firm in dealing with such matters and would adhere to the law.

“I propose in my manifesto to deal firmly, squarely, institutionally with the fight against corruption,” he stated.

Roots Party flagbearer, George Wajackoyah also skipped the debate. He showed up but left early before the live event commenced, citing prejudiced treatment and saying all four candidates should feature in the same debate.

Agano Party’s Presidential Candidate, David Waihiga Mwaure took to the podium alone.

Odinga had earlier said that he would organise an alternative public engagement forum that was to be televised live. His running mate Martha Karua was also meant to accompany him in the event that was to be held at Jericho Social Hall.
