Queen Elizabeth mourns Kibaki as a great Statesman with commendable legacy

Queen Elizabeth has mourned former President the late Mwai Kibaki as a great statesman in a message to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In her special condolence message, the Queen noted that she learnt of the death of President Kibaki with a lot of sorrow.

“He had a lifelong record of service to the Kenyan people. It will be of deep sadness to your country to have lost a great statesman, but Kenya can take pride in the legacy of his leadership. I send you and the people of Kenya my condolences at this loss,” she stated said.

Kibaki, who served as the country’s third president from December 2002 to April 2013, died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 90.

President Uhuru Kenyatta who announced the death of his mentor and predecessor was on Friday expected to lead Kenyans in his funeral service at the Nyayo Stadium.

Three current African presidents will attend former President Kibaki’s official state funeral today at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and South Sudan’s Salva Kiir Mayardit have jetted into the country.

Following Kibaki’s death, President Kiir declared three days of mourning for the late President, praising him for his participation in the South Sudanese peace process.

Kibaki’s body will be transported by road to Othaya Approved School Grounds on Saturday, utilising the Lee Funeral Home’s hearse, which will have clear glass windows that will allow Kenyans to see the coffin as the cortège makes its journey to Kibaki’s final resting place.
