Two mothers and their newborn babies escaped death by a whisker as when a huge fire broke out in maternity wing at Saba Saba health center.
Property worthy millions of shillings was also destroyed in the Wednesday afternoon inferno.
Those who rushed to the site said they heard huge explosion followed by a dark smoke bellowing from the facility.
It took the locals and fire fighters from the county several hours before managing to put it off.
According to the county chief officer of health Joseph Mbai, property worth over Sh. 3 million in equipment and medications that were razed down as the fire consumed the building.
He said patients in stable condition were discharged and others transferred to Maragua district hospital.
Mbai said the cause of the fire was not established but they suspect that it may have been caused by an electric fault.
He said most of the medications that were destroyed were HIV and Tuberculosis drugs and majority of the files were also destroyed.
“We managed to rescue a few equipment and some hospital and patients records before they got destroyed,” remarked Mbai.
The health officer said for the time being, area residents will have to seek for medical services from Maragua hospital as they work towards rehabilitating the health center.
He however assured that them that services will resume soonest possible noting that a lot of people rely on it for medical assistance.
