Havi confident of achieving three fundamental pillars during his tenure LSK

Former Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi has confidently expressed that he achieved three fundamental pillars during his tenure.

Speaking today during the voting for the new LSK officials, Havi said that they have oversighted Parliament to make sure good laws are made.

“We’ve managed to have Chief Justice write an advisory to the President of the Republic of Kenya to dissolve Parliament for the reason that it was not two-third gender compliant and the parliament itself had not enacted laws to that effect,” he said.

According to him, they effectively fought the attempt to destroy the current constitution through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

In his second point agenda, he noted that he defended the rule of law and constitutionalism stating that he filed many successful cases against the administrative actions of the government.

“I took office at a very perennial time when the COVID virus had just been discovered here in Kenya, advocates were not able to move from one place to another.

We went to court and on April 16, 2020 we made the central service provide a car to enable advocates move all over the country,” he said.

“Over and above that there are many other things that we have done for the benefits of advocates and members of the public.

In my evaluation, often the success of an outgoing president is never seen until the incoming president is just about to go.

So it is in my honest estimation, evaluation and conclusion that we have done what we could,” he added.

He challenged the person who will take over from him to continue with his legacy of monitoring legislation, defend the rule of law and constitutionalism and expanding the practice law environment.

Voting for LSK officials which kicked off at 6:00 am across the country raised concern after it emerged that junior lawyers who have less than 15 years of experience have been barred from running for any seat.

Some regions, like Kisumu, have experienced low turnout.

The election is being managed by the LSK board members headed by Senior Counsel Janmohamed Zehrabanu.

Currently, LSK is being headed by Linda Kiome Gitonga who is the caretaker president following the ouster and expiry of Nelson Havi’s term.

Havi is currently eyeing the Westlands parliamentary seat under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

“We shall ensure that the election is free and fair,” Gitonga said.

Five candidates; Omwanza Ombati, Matthew Nyabena, Bernard Kipng’etich who once served as LSK treasurer, former LSK Vice president Carolyne Kamende and Nairobi branch chairman Eric Theuri are running for president.

Those eyeing the female JSC female representative position include; Christine Kipsang, Julie Soweto and Jackline Ingutiah.

Those eyeing the vice president’s seat are Faith Aoko Odhiambo, Debora Anditi, Boniface Akusala and David Nyamweya.
