IPOA launches probe into fatal shooting of six people by police officer

The civilian oversight body against police, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched murder probe of six people who were shot by a police officer before committing suicide in Kabete, Kiambu County.

The officer, identified as Benson Imbatu based in Kabete, is reported to have first shot his wife in the neck at their house in Heights Apartments before he opened fire using an AK47 rifle on people who rushed to help.

According to IPOA, regardless of whether the officer involved is dead or alive, the authority will still investigate the incident.

The authority has this morning dispatched its Rapid Response team to obtain information that may be relevant in unveiling the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.

“Upon conclusion of the investigations, the Authority will make appropriate recommendations to relevant institutions,” stated IPOA.

IPOA has  urged police officers to fully explore mechanisms of addressing issues that affect their work.

According to the authorities, Imbatu went home with his AK47 rifle and picked a quarrel with his wife which prompted the shooting.

“Neighbours and bodaboda riders who operate near the Heights Apartment where the officer stayed rushed to the house to check what had happened after they also saw a fire emanating from the house,” said the poliice.

In the process, Imbatu stepped out with his gun blazing and shot the five in different locations near the house.

Two other people were shot and seriously wounded and are admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Police have recovered an AK-47 rifle with four rounds of ammunition and four empty cartridges.
