Embattled FKF president Nick Mwendwa re-arrested

Embattled Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa was today re-arrested, a day after the Director of Public Prosecutions closed a graft case against him.

Mwendwa was arrested around midday along Kiambu Road on his way to the CBD.

He was questioned at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road over the ongoing probe into claims of corruption at FKF.

FKF CEO Barry Otieno confirmed the embattled FKF boss was re-arrested by detectives just a day after the state dropped corruption charges against him.

The prosecution under DPP Noordin Haji yesterday said there was no case against Mwendwa.

“We seek to close the file as our team proceeds with probing the case at our own pace before we prefer charges against him,” said the DPP.

The court had granted the prosecution seven days to charge Mwendwa, who was accused of misappropriating funds allocated to the federation.

Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Wandia Nyamu allowed the application by the DPP and ordered the matter closed.

Mwendwa was last week arrested and arraigned before resident magistrate Wandia Nyamu.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed disbanded the FKF two weeks ago suspending Mwendwa.

The dissolution of the federation followed an independent audit into FKF’s affairs, which Amina said it concluded that the FKF officials allegedly flouted national laws and regulations guiding management of sports organisations, public funds, hiring and firing employees.
