Governor Ruto calls for amendment of constitution to allow MPs appointed as ministers
Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has called for the amendment of the Constitution to allow the president appoint MPs to the Cabinet saying that the current crop of cabinet secretaries are out of touch with reality.
The Chama Chama Mashinani (CCM) leader described President Uhure Kenyatta’s Cabinet as being aloof saying that they are only there to serve their interests and that of their bosses which according him works against his political aspirations.
Ruto accused Cabinet secretaries of losing touch with the needs of the people at the grassroots and claimed that were busy amassing wealth for themselves and their masters.
“The people have lost confidence with the ministers, who are interested only with minting money from their lofty offices in Nairobi at the expense of delivering on their mandate as provided for in the Constitution,” Ruto said.
Governor Ruto said the country should re-look at the current Constitution with a view to ensuring half of not the entire cabinet comprised of MPs who understood the needs of the people at the grassroots.
“We want to maintain the Presidential system but at the same time change the Constitution to allow appointment of the MPs to the cabinet in order to enhance service delivery to the people,” Ruto said.
Ruto spoke in Nakuru during a meeting with 1,700 CCM aspirants for various elective posts in the next General Election.
They included Narok West MP Patrick ole Ntutu who is gunning for the Narok governor’s seat, his Nakuru counterpart Dr Peter Koros, Kuresoi MP Zakayo Cheruiyot and Lydia Masikonte Ntimama.
He said the country should move away from the use of tyranny of numbers in an election to lock out other regions from government.
