EPRA closes 12 fuel stations countrywide

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has closed 12 fuel stations countrywide.

According to the regulator, the stations were selling adulterated and export bound motor fuels in the local market during the first quarter of 2021.

The regulator also suspended services of repeat offenders for three months.

“Pursuant to Section 92 of the Petroleum Act 2019, EPRA is mandated to monitor petroleum products offered for sale in the local market with the aim of preventing motor fuel adulteration and dumping of export bound fuels,” read the statement.

During the January – March 2021 period, the Authority conducted 5,536 tests at 1,182 petroleum sites.

From the tests, 98.99 per cent were found to be compliant however, 12 sites were  found to be non-compliant.

EPRA said it acted against the twelve sites in accordance with Regulation 15 of the Energy (Retail Facility Construction and Licensing) Regulations, 2013.

EPRA encouraged members of the public to report suspected cases of petroleum products adulteration or export dumping through [email protected], their hotline number 0708 000 444, the Authority’s USSD code (*363#) or the SMS service code (40850).

The twelve non-compliant petrol stations are; Riling filing station in Embu offering for sale Super Petrol containing High Sulphur.

The station is a repeat offender and has been suspended for three months effective January 12, 2021 and fined Taxes and Penalties amounting to Ksh. 432,810 which they have since paid.

Domestic kerosene marker dilution was detected in Lexo Energy Busia service station in Busia, which will be reopened after paying taxes and penalties amounting to Ksh. 560,950.

Still in Busia, Eagle filling station offering for sale super petrol meant for export its super petrol dispensing pump(s) are closed.

“Half Moon filling station in Nakuru offered for sale diesel meant for export the diesel dispensing pump(s) are closed. Nyatieko Filling Station in Kisii offering for sale super petrol meant for export, super petrol dispensing pump(s) are closed. BM Kanyakine filling station in Meru, offering for sale super petrol containing high sulphur, their super petrol dispensing pump(s) have been closed. Jire’s filling station in Trans Nzoia offering for sale super petrol meant for export its super petrol dispensing pump(s) reopened after paying taxes and penalties amounting to Ksh. 538,739,” stated the statement.

Kuwait filling station in Murang’a offering for sale super petrol meant for export its  super petrol dispensing pump(s) are closed.

Northstar energy service station in Wajir offering for sale diesel containing high sulphur, its diesel dispensing pump(s) are closed.

Zams Filling Station in Nyamira offering for sale super petrol containing high sulphur its super petrol dispensing pump(s) is closed.

In Mandera, Quality Energy service station and Mohamed Kosman Service Station offered for sale diesel containing high sulphur their diesel dispensing pumps are closed.
