NTSA to review PSV drivers age limit

The National Transport and Safety Authority will review the age limit for PSV drivers.

Currently, there is no age limit for drivers.

Director general Francis Meja on Thursday said the authority is shocked that the driver of the ill-fated bus that killed 56 people on Wednesday was 72 years old.

“We are surprised that a driver with such age has a lot of experience on the road, what happened now begs the question as to whether a time has come for us to review the age limit for PSV drivers,” he said.

On January 2018, NTSA introduced a new curriculum for driving schools and proposed new transport laws.

The authority said driving licences are to be renewed every year for a period of nine years.

In the 10th year, license holders will repeat the training and examination.

Drivers above 60 years will take an annual medical fitness report before their licenses are renewed.

Meja also dismissed claims that the issuance for the bus involved in the Ternan crash had expired.
