Chinese companies awarded tender for road in Murang’a

Cabinet secretary for Roads James Macharia has awarded tender for the Gitugi -Mioro road to a Chinese company after the failure by Nyoro Construction Company to complete the work in time.

He said the road has been under construction for close to seven years giving an indication that the contractor is not up to the task.

Speaking during the launch of Kiria-ini-  Kanjama road on Monday, the CS said lazy contractors have been frustrating government’s efforts in improving infrastructure across the country.

He said that those who fail to complete their work in time risks to have their tenders cancelled and awarded to someone else.

“It would not matter who does the work as long as it is done in the right way and on time” he remarked.

The new contractor who is set to start his work come next week and shall take over from Gitugi up to Mioro which is the upper part while Nyoro shall be required to complete the lower part of the road.

The delay in the completion of the road has seen the locals protest demanding the government revokes the tender and give it to someone else.

The tender for the Mairi-Makomboki- Gituru road has also been awarded to another contractor after Lee Construction Company failed to complete it in time.

Macharia said a total of Sh300 billion has been set aside for construction and upgrading of various roads across the country as the government seeks to achieve the vision 2030.

“As much as we would like to support the local contractors, they are letting us down” he added.
