Several voters in Elgeyo Markwet fail to participate in JP primaries over missing names
Hundreds of youth and the elderly in Elgeyo Marakwet County were locked out of the Jubilee Party primaries following missing of their names in the 2013 voter register.
Potential voters who turned up in the morning at various polling stations across the county were turned away by the presiding officers despite pleas to be allowed to participate in the nomination.
Area governor Alex Tolgos who cast his vote at Kiptabus primary school cried foul over misplacement of ballot papers and delay in distribution of electoral materials in sections of the polling
stations.
He cited polling stations at St Patrick’s High School, Iten primary school, Mindililwo and Rural area where scores of residents were kept waiting for more than three hours before the arrival of ballot papers.
‘It seems the party was just postponing the problem instead of improving from the challenges it faced from the botched primaries last week,’ added Tolgos.
He also slammed Jubilee Party for sticking to use of 2013 in the primaries instead of the updated register to allow more party supporters to exercise their rights to elect leaders of their choice.
‘The use of 2013 register in the nomination exercise has really disadvantaged scores of potential youth and the elderly from exercising their democratic rights,’ complained Tolgos who was accompanied by his Deputy Gabriel Lagat.
In Kerio Valley region, polling stations bordering the volatile Tiaty constituency in Baringo County were give first priority in the distribution of ballot paper amid tight security.
