Kiambu Deputy Speaker John Njue arrested, grilled by Eacc detectives over bribery claims
The Kiambu County Assembly Deputy speaker John Njue Njeru was today grilled for hours by detectives attached to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (Eacc) over alleged bribery claims.
According to preliminary investigations, Njue is accused of demanding a bribe worth Sh130,000 and a free portion of land belonging to a complainant within Thika town in Kiambu county.
“He is a person of interest to a bribery case in Thika.” A detective at Eacc told The Informer Media Group.
After his dramatic arrest, Njue was questioned and recorded statement at Eacc headquarters, Integrity Center before being released.
The Hospital Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) within Thika, Njue is allegedly said to have asked for the bribe so as to facilitate and have the complainant permitted to proceed with any activity on her land worth Sh15million.
Besides the money solicited, he is also alleged to have demanded to be given a piece of the parcel of land in question before the owner sensed foul play and moved to the Eacc to seek intervention.
And in a dramatic scene at Eacc, after he was released, to evade responding questions to journalists who camped outside Integrity Center, Njue faked a telephone conversation and walked direct to his car without speaking to them, holding his handset on his right ear ostensibly to evade reporters who prodded him with questions.
